What is Reading Counts?
Scholastic
Reading Counts! (SRC!) Enterprise Edition is a software program
that manages and motivates independent reading school-wide.
For Germanton Elementary
School's purposes, Reading Counts has replaced Accelerated
Reader. It is also used primarily with 3rd, 4th and 5th
grades.
How Does Reading Counts work?
1.
Students take the Scholastic Reading Inventory at school on the
computer.
The inventory assesses their lexile level (or reading
level).
2.
Students select a book based on their lexile range.
Rule of thumb is 50 lexiles above their score and 100 below.
For example: SRI indicates a student's lexile to be 400.
Their lexile range is 300-450. Students are assisted in
choosing books within their range and books that are quizzable
(not all books are).
3. Test students’
comprehension.
After students read a book, they take a computer-generated
quiz and receive instant feedback.
Take
a Sample Quiz
4. Goals.
Each student is assigned a points goal for each quarter and for
the year. Incentives are available for each quarter.
5. Communication
Students keep track of their lexile, their quizzes and
conference with teacher regarding their progress.
Teachers communicate progress quarterly to parents.
Please contact Mrs. Scott at school for more information on the

Can my child take a Reading Counts
test from home?
No. The
software program is site-based not web-based.What kinds of books should my child be
reading?
Reading
Counts and its companion assessment program SRI (Scholastic
Reading Inventory) generate a suggested reading list based on
the student’s reading ability and interests (such as Science
Fiction, History, etc.)
What are Lexiles?
“The Lexile
Framework® is a research-proven system for measuring students'
reading levels and matching readers to text. The Lexile
Framework® is unique because it uses a common metric—a Lexile®
measure—to evaluate both reading ability and text difficulty. By
placing both reader and text on the same scale, the Lexile
Framework® allows educators to forecast the level of
comprehension a student will experience with a particular text,
and to evaluate curriculum needs based on each student's ability
to comprehend the materials.”

Can my child take a test on any
book he/she wants?
Discuss this with
the teacher. Classroom teachers have specific goals for the
class as a whole or for individual students. Our quiz database
includes all 40,000 quizzes the software company offers.
But, don’t assume that just because the book is lexiled that we have
the quiz for it.
Please access the following for more
information regarding the Lexile Framework.
